Getting Married in the Great Outdoors

There comes a time in planning every wedding when the question must be answered: indoors or outdoors? Many couples choose an outdoor wedding to highlight their love of nature, set a casual tone, or add twilight enchantment to a formal ceremony. But soon, these couples are reading the Farmers’ Almanac and 14-day forecasts like their marriage depends on it.

The downside to an outdoor wedding is what can’t be planned—the weather. Wind, rain, and extreme temps make having a backup plan a must. If you’re having a wedding at your home, for example, make sure all invited guests can fit inside comfortably. If you’re renting a tent, the sides can be covered to protect against rainwater. At a beach wedding, colorful umbrellas can be a piece of practical décor. At many parks and historic sites, indoor space can be rented ahead of time—whether you intend to use it or not!

Think you can handle an outdoor ceremony? Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Am I comfortable with uninvited spectators?
  2. Am I comfortable with uninvited guests, such as bugs?
  3. Can I laugh at a soaked updo and rivers of mascara?
  4. Do I love a good surprise?
  5. Do my guests love a good surprise?

If you decide that an outdoor ceremony is for you, there are a few considerations beyond weather. Can the site you’ve chosen be rigged for sound? Do you need any permits for holding an event there? Are restrooms available? And, we strongly urge even the most adventurous couples to hire a planner to orchestrate a flawless outdoor ceremony. If done right, nature can be the most beautiful guest at your ceremony. Even if things don’t go as planned, don’t let stress rain on your special day. Just like in marriage, you’ll be together for every moment, rain or shine.
